About the theater

Headed by Artistic Director Arthur Yorinks and Executive Director Lynn M. Stirrup, AMT is rebuilding its performing company and school and has inaugurated its new series AMT Talks all in its new home on West 25th Street in New York City.

The Story of AMT

In 1952, young actor and director Paul J. Curtis created the American Mime Theatre in New York. With training from Erwin Piscator at The New School in the 1940s and incorporating the influences of modern dance and American acting methods of the time, Paul developed a unique kind of movement theater with its own aesthetic principles and training methods.

In an ever-evolving collaborative effort, Paul and many American Mime performing companies over the years created plays utilizing all means of expression through ‘acting in form’. And through several decades and thousands of students, the American Mime Theatre School has had an undeniable influence on the acting profession and performers of all kinds.

Now, after a waning period in its history, AMT has been relaunched with a fresh excitement and energy and soon new works ranging from plays in silence to plays with sound scores to plays that incorporate vocalization all spanning the spectrum of literal narrative to abstraction.

American Mime Theatre is committed to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment where all board members, staff, performers, volunteers, donors, audiences, and visitors feel respected and valued regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation or identity, physical or cognitive ability, education, or any other bias.
